Roslyn Arlin Mickelson was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on April 3, 1948, but grew up in Los Angeles, California and eventually became a naturalized citizen. Mickelson remained in Los Angeles and earned a PhD at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1984. She has been in Charlotte since 1985, where she teaches sociology, womens studies, and information technology.
